The process, in order

  1. 1. Apply for a learner permit at an NDLS centre.
  2. 2. Pass the theory test — 45 questions, 35 correct to pass.
  3. 3. Complete the 12 EDT (Essential Driver Training) lessons.
  4. 4. Hold the permit at least six months before you can sit the test.
  5. 5. Book the practical test at rsa.ie.
  6. 6. Pass the practical test.
  7. 7. Apply for the full licence within two years of passing.

RSA and NDLS fees as published for 2026. Lesson prices vary by school and county; the figure here uses a typical rate. Insurance is not included and is usually the largest cost of a first year on the road.
